Know Before You Go: Sahara Travel Guide

January 28, 2026 · Desert Lotus Retreat

Preparing for a Sahara desert trip is part of the adventure. Here is everything you need to know before you arrive at M'Hamid El Ghizlane.

🌤️ Weather

The best time to visit is October to April, when daytime temperatures range from 20–30°C. Summer (May–September) can exceed 45°C. Winter nights can drop to near freezing — warm layers are essential. Spring (March–May) brings wildflowers and perfect trekking conditions. Autumn (October–November) offers golden light and comfortable heat.

🎒 What to Pack

Less is more. Essentials include: loose, light-coloured clothing (long sleeves for sun protection), a wide-brimmed hat or chèche scarf, high-SPF sunscreen (50+), quality sunglasses, comfortable walking shoes, a warm fleece for cold nights, a reusable water bottle (min. 2L), a headlamp with spare batteries, and a small daypack. We provide all camping equipment, meals, and mineral water.

🏥 Health & Safety

Travel insurance with medical evacuation is strongly recommended. Mustapha holds a wilderness first aid certificate and carries a comprehensive first aid kit. The nearest hospital is in Zagora (100 km). Drink only bottled or filtered water — we provide sufficient supplies. Inform Mustapha of any medical conditions or dietary requirements before your trip.

🤝 Local Customs

Morocco is a Muslim country. Dress modestly in public (shoulders and knees covered). Always greet with "As-salamu alaykum". Accept mint tea when offered — refusing is considered impolite. Use your right hand for eating, greeting, and giving. Always ask permission before photographing people. A small gift for nomadic families (sweets for children, pens) is warmly received.

📶 Connectivity

Mobile coverage is available in M'Hamid village (4G with Maroc Telecom, Orange, or Inwi). Once you venture into the deep desert, expect no signal — which is precisely the point. We carry a satellite phone for emergencies. Your guide will inform your emergency contact of your itinerary before departure.
